On the 8th May in 2012, the Department for Transport announced that the 24 2 car Class 456's would be transferred from Southern to South West trains to lengthen train lengths in peak services. The Southern services on the South London Line were removed late in 2012 and replaced by London Overground services.

The first Class 456 to run on the South West Trains network was on the Guildford to Ascot route on March 23rd, 2014. They are currently running in Southern Livery 4 car units (2x2 carriages) without fleet names, but are due to be refurbished this summer, with full completion of the refurbishment by the end of 2015.
