GATWICK EXPRESS
The Gatwick Express operates from London Victoria to Gatwick Airport, calling at 8 stations in total. The service has been running since 1984, in British Rail days, when it used slam door stock. However, the station itself at Gatwick Airport was built a few years before in 1958. It was originally served by Mainline services before the designated GE service began. Over the years, the Gatwick Express become more and more popular as an efficient and practical method to starting or ending your holiday.
FLEET:
Over time, the GE service has changed significantly. The service is now operated by Govia Thameslink (until 2021) and the fleet has also changed too. Class 488/2s and 488/3s have been scrapped and Class 460s withdrawn in 2012 (the carriages used to create the 458/5s at South West Trains). There's also one Class 73 for backup, acting as the Thunderbird.
In the next few years, the Class 442s will also be withdrawn when Class 387/2s replace them - as stated previously. Other the upcoming year the team will be keeping you updated on the introduction of this new stock.

Class 387/2 for Gatwick Express. Entering 2016.
FACTS:
  • From 4am, when the service begins, the trains depart every 15 minutes.
  • The route takes approximately 30 minutes in each direction.
  • The service is approximately twice as fast and four times cheaper than a taxi.
  • Ticket wise, a standard class adult return costs £34.90 (£19.90 single) whilst it's £17.45 for a child return.
