South West ~ Class 444/450 - Door Select

(C) Liam

A bespoke system has been installed to SouthWestTrains class 444/450 units. ASDO (automatic selective door opening) allows a sensor on the track to calculate how many train coaches are on a platform. The guard can then open specific doors of the train. As a consequence, boarding is quicker and passengers don't have to walk the length of the train.

Class 444/450 units operate on many SouthWestTrains services, including Waterloo to Reading/ Weybridge/Alton/ Haslemere/ Portsmouth/ Poole /Bournemouth/ Weymouth and Southampton.

When at stations with short platforms (and also on-board trains), CIS screens and announcements will advise and inform you to travel in a specific part of the train. Since the new upgrade, these screens will now reflect which carriages you should use.

Of course this system isn't yet seamless, as it's only just be fitted. Thus, announcements or screens may be wrong. Let SouthWestTrains aware if you notice an error and they can resolve it.  Harry
