HERITAGE: Railtours Dec 2015

Harry here, covering the Heritage Focus series whilst Jacob is away.....

Last weekend, Orson (from our team) took a trip to Peterborough to capture the Duchess of Sutherland, 46233.

Built in 1938 in Crewe, it is most definitely still going strong, despite clocking over 1 million miles! It was the 3rd type of its class and at first was allocated to Camden, London for use on London Midland and Scottish railway (between London Euston and Liverpool or Glasgow). It was withdrawn by BR in 1964, and is now under preservation.

It is in 'Brunswick green', as used by British Rail during the 1950s. It is planned for it to remain in this livery until Christmas, when it will be painted into LMS Crimson Lake colours. On 11th June 2002, it was the first steam locomotive to haul the Royal Train in 35 years, transporting Queen Elizabeth II on a tour to Northern Wales as part of the Golden Jubilee.

Then in 2005, it hauled the Royal Train once again, this time The Prince of Wales between Settle and Carlisle. His majesty even had a go at the helm!

Next, fellow author Andy was out on Saturday to photograph 60163 (The Belmond British Pullman). It was on a Christmas Lunch Rail Tour from London Victoria, before returning there later on that day.

A number of special Rail Tours have been taking place over this Festive Period around the entire of Great Britain. If you've seen one recently, we'd love to see your photos!

Seen here at Bury St Edmunds, en-route to Peterborough
before returning to Ipswich and Norwich.
Finally, Jonathan Maxim captured the Northern Belle which also operated over the Weekend. On Saturday, it went from Neville Hill to Norwich (empty) before loading up for Norwich to Peterborough (via Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds). The return journey was Peterborough to Norwich (via Thetford) and onto Ipswich, before going back to Crewe empty. It was formed of a number of coaches and hauled by DRS owned 57301 (DRS colours) and 57305 (Northern Belle livery). Thanks Jonathan!

Tomorrow evening I'll be posting about Updates from Direct Rail Services. I expect to have this post up by about 7:30 tomorrow before I go to college. Bye for now!
