144012 - Pacer Demonstrator Overview
Northern Rail Demonstrator 144012. It's been a while since we last reported this unit, but this project shows how the dated Pacer units can be transformed into something which is simply spectacular.... Even though at a fairly significant price tag!
This post will express the highlights and features of this unit which makes a 1984 (Hunslet Barclay) built unit look like it's from the 2020 era!
This pilot unit was launched in Spring 2015. A scheme carried out by owner Porterbrook in a bid to show the endless possibilities of bringing these units up-to-date and suitable for the 21st century... A modern unit with lots of space, light and suitable for all.
The seats inside are in the Fainsa style (like the Govia electrostars) and a new style PIS screen has been fitted on both the ceiling in each carriage and also on the toilet wall.
Note the different colour scheme used to the usual Northern livery, with dynamic modern swirls across the saloon. More photos here, by Paul Bigland.
This unit is certainly one which stands out, not just for being economical! Bold, modern, airy and spacious! But does it give a good journey? The original was criticised for an uncomfortable rough ride, especially when braking or going around corners, due to it's bus-style chassis. However, it's decided that Pacers of the Northern fleet will be withdrawn by 2019 anyway, due to the DDA guidelines and legislation. Until then, we need to think of these units as something which "could of been rolled out" across the entire Pacer Fleet if this scenario hadn't occured.
A fond farewell to Northern Rail whilst on the topic - their franchise ends at the end of the month when Arriva Rail North take over. *Harry
